Program Overview

Agriculture is a $13 billion business in Georgia with a wealth of opportunities for employment for students with an understanding of both the production and business functions of the industry. Our program prepares students to enter this broad industry as a manager or entrepreneur in the areas of poultry, horticulture, and animal science.

Athens Technical College is uniquely located in northeast Georgia – the worldwide hub of poultry production, the state epicenter for nursery production, and a prime position for meeting the local food needs for the rapidly growing I-85 corridor. Graduates have become farm owners, managers in poultry and greenhouse production, and field technicians.

Experiential learning abounds in our courses with laboratory components. These include horticulture, animal science, and poultry science, along with agricultural mechanics and structures courses, and the required internship. Graduates own their own companies and currently work for James Greenhouse, Classic Groundcovers, Centurion Poultry, Pilgrims Poultry, Country Charm Eggs, and the USDA to name a few. Some graduates have continued their education at the University of Georgia and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Although salaries vary among employers, our graduates typically start in the $30,000-$45,000 range, with approximately $40,000 being average.
